About Kollam

Kollam is one of the 16 district cities in the Indian state of Kerala. Also known by its former name 'Quilon', Kollam is the heart of India's cashew trading and processing industry. The city of Kollam is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on the West, Tamil Nadu on the East, Alapuzha and Pathanamthitta districts on the North and Thiruvananthapuram district on the South. The city boasts of rich political, cultural and commercial history.

Geography and Climate of Kollam

Kollam is located 64 KM from the city capital of Trivandrum, 138 KM from Kochi and 318 KM from Kozhikode. Located on the banks of Ashtamudi Lake, city has multiple rivers flowing here including River Ithikkara, River Kallada and National Waterway 3. The city experiences a tropical climate with very little seasonal variation in temperature. April to November is generally the wet period when city experiences comparatively more rainfall.

Transport in Kollam

The city of Kollam is well connected to different cities in state and rest of India through different means of transport. NH 66, NH 183, NH 744 and many other state highways connect the city to nearby cities with frequent bus services operating on different routes. Kollam junction happens to be the second largest railway station in Kerala. All major trains have a halt here making it comfortable for people to reach any corner of India easily. Trivandrum International Airport is the nearest one from here located at a distance of 66 KM. There are many domestic and international flights operating from here daily. There are also state boat services available from here to reach to nearby cities. One can even choose to take a nice water ride in a luxury double decker boat with family and friends.

Kollam - Past and Present

Kollam has always been a place of commercial importance since ancient times. Since the ancient city of Quilon, it used to be a flourishing port during the Chera dynasty. It later became capital of the Kingdom of Quilon and was considered as one of the four early entrepots in global sea trade. From the days of Ancient Romans and Phoenicians, it always had a high commercial importance. The city experience the Battle of Quilon that was fought between a troop of the Indian kingdom of Travancore and the East India Company. During the reign of Marthanda Varma, the Venad Kingdom was completely merged with the Kingdom of Travancore.

Today Kollam is a developed and metropolitan city of India. It is a commercial center in Kerala known for cashew trading and processing. There are all kinds of modern amenities that one can find here today. The Kerala Government has also decided to develop the city as "Port City of Kerala". There are people of all religions living here and city has many religious places here including temples, mosques and churches.

Economy of Kollam

Kollam - The "Cashew Capital of the World" is traditionally known for its cashew trading and there are a lot of cashew processing units in the city. It is the biggest export centers of cashew worldwide. Also it is one of the many seafood export hubs in India. In addition to thriving export industry here, dairy farming has picked up really well here. There are many fishing villages in the district city. The city also boasts about large deposits of China Clay, lime shell deposits and Bauxite deposits.

Culture and Festivals of Kollam

There are people of different religions living in harmony in Kollam. As per the census of 2011, city has a population of 3,48,657 of which 1,68,006 are males and 1,80651 are females. Of the total population here, around 56% are Hindus, 22% are Muslims and 21% are Christians. The city has a literacy rate of 93.77% which is higher than the national average of 74.04%.

The annual festival of "Kollam Fest" is celebrated here with a lot of energy. There are thousands of domestic and foreign tourists that flock the town to witness the fest. One can get a true feel of Kollam's rich cultural heritage and commercial opportunities that exist here during the fest. Kollam Pooram and The President's Trophy Boat Race (PTBR) are other popular festivals that are celebrated here every year.

Being a Hindu majority city, one can find a lot of Hindu temples here including Anandavalleeshwaram Sri Mahadevar Temple ( a 400 year old ancient temple), Ammachiveedu Muhurthi temple ( 1 600 year old ancient temple), Asramam Sree Krishna Swamy Temple, Kottankulangara Devi Temple, Puttingal Devi Temple and Sasthamcotta Sree Dharma Sastha Temple. There are also many ancient churches and mosques here like Infant Jesus Cathedral (a 400 year old church), Dutch Church in Munroe Island (built in 1878), St.Thomas Church, Juma-'Ath Palli at Karuva (a 300 year old Mosque), Elampalloor Juma-A-Masjid, Chinnakada Juma Masjid and Koivila Juma Masjid.
